Latin-American Perspectives

Fri April 23, 2010   7pm Mission Viejo, CA

Sun April 25, 2010   2pm Encinitas, CA

¡Viva América Latina!  From cerveza to cachaça, join us in toasting our neighbors to the south.  Revueltas’ tequila-inspired mariachi hallucinations across Mexican deserts, Ginastera’s galloping gauchos of the vast Argentinean pampas, and the swinging samba hips of Villa-Lobos’ Brazilian rainforest will leave you ready for your well-deserved siesta.  Also on the menu is Passage, a ballet score by composer-in-residence Matthew Tommasini, chronicling the border crossing of Mexico’s northbound.

Folk Inspirations

Sun May 23, 2010   2pm Encinitas, CA

Sat May 29, 2010   7pm Mission Viejo, CA

Travel to distant lands with a concert inspired by folk music from Europe and Asia, featuring Bela Bartok’s passionate postcard from Eastern Europe, Romanian Folk Dances in a new arrangement by Matthew Tommasini, Antonin Dvorak’s Quartet in G Major, infused with Czech tunes, and ceremonial music from Cambodia in Khse Buon by San Diego-based composer Chinary Ung.  Inspired by a trip to Italy, composer-in-residence Matthew Tommasini returns with an entrancing new work flavored by a wild folk dance called the pizzica.

Sonic Stories

Sat June 26, 2010   7pm Mission Viejo, CA

Sun June 27, 2010   2pm Encinitas, CA

Our season finale explores novels, myths, and transcendent visions through music.  We present Leoš Janácek’s evocative Quartet No. 1 inspired by Tolstoy’s controversial novel The Kreutzer Sonata about the power of jealousy and passion, Olivier Messiaen’s personal reflections on the end of the world while a prisoner of war in his Quartet for the End of Time, and Orpheus’ fatal love personified by pulsating rock rhythms in Matthew Tommasini’s Dreams of Orpheus.
